Margaret A. Smith, age 91 years slipped peacefully away on April 17, 2019 in Helena, Montana where she relocated in failing health to live near her oldest daughter.
She was a life long resident of Ely, Nevada, born July 30, 1927 to Guy A and Betty Merle (Giles) Gulley. She attended Ely Grade School, Saint Mary’s of the Wasatch High School in Salt Lake City Utah and White Pine High School.
Margaret married Hyrum Woodruff (Ted) Wilcox in Ely Nevada September 9,1946, was widowed December 21,1956. She married John Gregory Smith on March 3, 1960, widowed March 11, 1992.
She was a member of Ely Drove No. 26 BPOE Does, American Legion Auxilary, AIME Auxilary, voluteered at Steptoe Valley Hospital, and a member of a bridge club. Margaret enjoyed picnicing in the mountains around Ely, loved exploring the United States on road trips, reading historical books of the areas visited and particularly enjoyed her cruise and train tour of Alaska.
An avid sports fan, knowing many team and player statistics, she especially enjoyed sitting on her front porch watching the little league games. An avid reader until the loss of her sight then enjoying books on tapes. She enjoyed crocheting cooking, and baking. Her ultimate joy was being with her family, she was very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was very generous to family and friends and charities that involved veterans, children, and food pantries.
Survivors include: Rebecca Wilcox Staunton (Bill) of Montana City, Montana, Kathleen Wilcox Harwood (Doug) of Ely, Nevada, John Wilcox of Ely, Nevada, and Genevieve Smith Loguidice of Panama City, Florida. Grandchildren: William Staunton of Dallas, Texas, Phillip Staunton of Great Falls, Montana, Matthew Staunton of Carlsbad, California, Micheal Sandberg of Ely, Nevada, Valerie McQueen Hutchinson of Ely, Nevada, Neil Wilcox of Beaverton, Oregon, Cheryl Wilcox Childers of Longview, Washington, Jacob Wilcox of Las Vegas, Meagan Loguidce of Napales, Florida, Kaitlin Loguidice of Palm Coast, Florida, and 10 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased in death by her siblings: Virginia (Gulley) Barbee, William (Bill) Gulley, Madelyn (Gulley) Fonteneau Brunina, Wallace Gulley, Betty (Gulley) Herzinger, Patricia (Gulley) Dory, James Gulley, husbands: Ted Wilcox, John Smith, and son James (Jimmy) Wilcox.
A memorial service will held Sacred Heart Catholic Church on May 2, 2019 at 2:00pm and a reception to follow at St. Lawrence Hall.
