It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Arthur ‘Artie’ E. Carling. Artie passed peacefully January 16, 2025. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years ago, he was able to live out his final years with the support of his family.
Art is a native Nevadan, born and raised in Ruth, NV on January 28, 1946. He as the oldest sibling of 6 sisters and one younger brother. He attended White Pine High School and was a good athlete especially enjoying baseball & football. He made lifelong friends in Ely & stayed in touch with a lot of them, several right until the very end. He was a loving friend, brother, and son who is dearly missed.
Art moved to Reno, NV to attend UNR with a bachelor’s degree in education and later a master’s in administration. He started in the WCSD as an aquatics instructor through the original Moana pool program. He was then a teacher at Virgina Palmer ES until he became a principal and spent many years at Verdi ES. He loved being a part of the Verdi community and helping his students/families/colleagues as this was his greatest passion. Art finished his last few years before retirement as the principal at Elmcrest ES. In addition, he inspired many students as coach, referee, and umpire. He was inducted into the officiating Hall of Fame in 2016. His legacy of support, dedication, and impact on so many people will live on through the lives he touched.
Artie’s most cherished roles were being a husband, father, and Grampie. Artie was married for over 52 years to his wife Kristie whom he loved dearly. He was so proud to be a dad to his three children. He attended all their activities, sporting events, and was always the loudest one whistling right on the sidelines. He was also ‘Grampie’ to his three grandchildren. Being a Grampie has been one of his greatest joys in life and he loved being a part of his grandkid’s lives.
Art was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Hidden Valley Country Club. He was a big fan of the San Francisco Giants & 49ers and followed their season each year. He also loved going to UNR Wolfpack football games cheering from the alumni section with his people. Artie was known for watching the game while listening to the commentary through his earphones the entire game.
Anyone who ever had the good fortune to meet him immediately knew what a loving, genuine person he was. He loved helping all his people and was always the ‘shirt off his back’ type of guy. He was such an amazing dad, husband, brother, friend, educator, and remarkable human being who positively impacted countless lives.
Art is survived by his beloved wife Kristie; three children: Amy (Todd Bodensteiner), Doug, and Molly; his three grandchildren: Ayla & Ellie Bodensteiner and Crosby Carling; sisters: Louise Nelson, Tamara Sandoval (Rick), Barbara Skinner, and Karen Carling.
A celebration of life will be held in the near future and will be announced via social media.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization as his biggest passion in life was to help and inspire kids.
He will be missed by all, but especially his family. Love you always! xoxo
