Yvonne Theresa DeForest returned to her father in Heaven on Monday May 6, 2019. Yvonne was Born April 4, 1953 in the Steptoe Valley Hospital in Ely Nevada. She attended elementary school in Ely and high school in Kearns, Utah. She married Jerry “Greek” DeForest on January 8, 1970. Together they had 2 children Shane and Shaun.

Yvonne was a strong independent woman who had the true frontier womans strength and persistence.  She faced all things in life head on with a grace that many admired.

Yvonne had a rewarding career of public service working first for the United States Post Office, and later for the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Nevada Department of Prisons. Her expertise and pursuit of excellence earned her much respect among her peers and carried her to positions of leadership.

However Yvonne was always a wife and mother first, and she prioritized her family above all other things.  Whether it was keeping the home fires burning or just keeping the dinner warm, Yvonne’s love for her family was always on full display as a wife, mother, sister, and grandmother.   She was a thoughtful and caring friend who would do anything for you, and a formidable enemy if crossed.

In 2005, Yvonne retired after 30 years and continued her pursuit of life by camping fishing and traveling. Yvonne was a true artist, and she could create the most amazing and beautiful crafts. She could see the beauty in god’s creations in everything around her, whether it was the golden display of the Quaking Aspen in their fall colors, a beautiful buck deer, or a delicate hummingbird.  She was also able to bring that beauty out of almost anything she put her hands on and she had many hobbies.  Quilting was her true passion though, and she took pride in working with fabric of all sorts to produce a work of art.

We will miss your musical tastes, cooking genius, crusty and sometimes rank sense of humor, and your advice and companionship.    We know you will be looking down on us with our other family members who departed this world first though, and it comforts us to know you are no longer in pain.

Yvonne is survived by her husband (Jerry), two sons, Shane and Shaun “Murry” (Amanda) three grandchildren Cody, Elisa and Trace, brothers Chris Tibble (Autumn), Dennis Ogden (Caroline), and Victor Ogden (Angie). She is also survived by her beloved pet Bandit.

Out of respect for Yvonne’s wish, there will be no services.

Gregory John Chachas Dies at 86

Gregory John Chachas was born July 5, l932 in Steamboat Springs, CO to Evelyn Tsimopoulos Chachas and John Chachas, both immigrants from Greece.  He attended elementary school in Ely Nevada, where the family had made its home since 1926. Gregory attended high school at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah but graduated from White Pine High School in 1948, returning to Ely for the final semester his senior year upon the unexpected death of his elder sister, Bessie.  He was deemed an exceptionally bright student and through the support of Wasatch Academy, he applied and was accepted to Harvard University.

He was affiliated there with Dunster House and a member of Harvard’s tennis team.  While he entered in the Harvard class of 1953, his college years were interrupted by two breaks, first to work on the family’s cattle ranch and then the Korean conflict. After a year at Harvard, he took a leave and returned to the Cleveland Ranch for two years. During his years of solitude on the ranch he taught himself Morse code, and upon being drafted the U.S. military deployed him as a high-speed radio operator in Manheim, Germany rather than the Korean peninsula. Upon completion of his military tour he was discharged and returned to Harvard and completed his baccalaureate degree in Economics. Upon graduation he returned to the west and subsequently attended the University of Utah College of Law, where he earned his juris doctorate degree.

He married Mary Pappasideris in 1958, who at the time was the Women’s Section editor of The Salt Lake Tribune. The couple moved to Ely in 1960 where Mr. Chachas established a law practice.  Along with his father and brother, Ted, they owned and operated several successful local businesses including the Junction Motor Service Company, the first GM dealership established in Northern Nevada; the Hilltop Motel and Hilltop Drug; and the Cleveland Ranch, a large and historic Nevada cattle ranch in Spring Valley. He and his brother were instrumental in developing numerous family assets such as a shopping center featuring a Safeway Supermarket and other stores for the Ely community.

In his professional career he practiced law in Ely and also served as the Ely City Attorney. He later served as District Attorney for Eureka County, Nevada, and District Attorney for White Pine County, as well.  Later in his life he developed a passion for mineral exploration and development and accumulated a series of mining properties in Nevada and Idaho. Since the mid-1990s, he concentrated on his investments in water and mining properties.

Gregory preferred the open spaces and drove hundreds of thousands of miles in the American west. He was an avid swimmer, tennis player, skier and hunter. He preferred the expansive vistas of Nevada and maintained a home in Ely until his death. He liked nothing more than walking with his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary, who died in January 2016. He is survived by his three sons: Gregory (wife Tammy) of San Diego; George (wife Cheryl) of San Diego and Park City; and John (wife Diane) of New York City.  He loved playing chess and telling one-line jokes to his seven grandchildren: Gregory III, Elizabeth, Alexander, Victoria, Anne, Christopher, and Jack. He also is survived by one brother, James, but was preceded in death by his sister, Bessie, and two brothers Theodore (Ted) and Basil.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Salt Lake followed by a private service at Mount Olivet Cemetery. A Celebration of Life reception will be held at the Alta Club (100 E. South Temple) on Saturday, May 4th at 12:30 pm to which all friends are welcome.

STEVENSVILLE, MT – Walter S. Grubic, 91, of Stevensville, MT, formerly of Ely, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 20 at his home surrounded by family.  He was born November 27, 1927 in Ely, Nevada, the son of Samuel and Mara Grubic.

Walt grew up in the mining community of Ruth, Nevada.  He was the youngest of 13 children – 9 boys and 4 girls.  And, the only one born in a hospital.  Walt, through his journals, shared many memories of his youth – events that would be in great contrast to our lives of today.

After high school, Walt served in the Army, stationed stateside, since he had six older brothers actively serving in WWII overseas.  After his discharge, he attended Utah State University and graduated with a degree in Landscape Architecture.  He was employed by the Forest Service as a Land Use Planner.  It was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where he met his future wife, Diane Waldo, who also worked for the Forest Service.  They married on October 9, 1976.

Walt’s and Diane’s careers took them to a number of great work locations in the Intermountain West.  Walt retired from the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Salt Lake City, in 1985.  After Diane’s retirement in 2000, from the Gallatin National Forest, they moved to Phoenix.  In 2012, they decided to move “home” to Montana, to the country they both loved.

Walt is survived by his wife, Diane of Stevensville, MT; his two stepsons – Brian (Misti) Nettleton of Helena, MT and Ron (Leisa) Nettleton of Phoenix; 10 wonderful grandchildren: Diana, Nicole, Lisa-Marie, Michael, Miya, Sydney, Madison, John, Nick, and Josh; and his sister-in-law, Dotty Kostecki.

Our family would like to extend our deep appreciation to Dr. Sheehan, and staff, and Marcus-Daly Hospice for their loving care of Walt.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 4, 1:00 pm at Garden City Church, 1100 S. Higgins Avenue in Missoula, MT.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Marcus-Daly Hospice, 1200 Westwood Dr., Hamilton, MT 59840.
