Lannis A. ‘Bud’ Dory

Lannis A. “Bud” Dory passed peacefully from this life in the early hours of Sept. 1, 2016.

Bud was born the second of four boys on March 26, 1929, in Clovis, Calif. to Ray and Ruth Dory. His birth certificate lists his father’s occupation as “cowboy” and his principal industry as “cattle,” his mother’s occupation as “housewife” and the family residence as “tent”! Rough and tumble beginnings for sure!

The family moved to Ray’s hometown, Austin, Nev. soon after. Bud attended school in Austin and Smith Creek and finished his formal schooling at grade eight, while also tending the family ranch in Grass Valley, Nev.

After his schooling, Bud was employed by Dick and Molly McGee in Grass Valley at their ranch as an exercise boy for their thoroughbred race horses due to his slight stature. Bud was known around Austin in his early years as an expert horseman and bronc rider. A few years passed and Bud hired on with Isbell Construction and moved to Ely, Nev., where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Gulley.

Soon after being of age, Bud enlisted in the U.S. Army and shipped out to serve in the Korean conflict. His tour completed, Bud shipped home to begin his life providing for his wife and children; Bud Jr., Mike, and daughter Janelle.

Bud joined the Operating Engineers Trade Union in 1954 and with his family, moved all over northern Nevada following his work until Pat had enough and insisted on settling down.

They settled in Fallon, Nev. in the early sixties. Bud and Pat had a wonderful life in Fallon, raising the kids and making many, many life long friends until the passing of Pat’s brother, Jim Gulley in 1979. They then, with her dad, Guy Gulley, entered in his real estate business and Bud continued his career until retiring in 1988.

Bud and Pat enjoyed their later years fishing, hunting, exploring, gardening and most of all, each other’s company, even through enduring the tragic loss of their son and daughter in 1992.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, son, Bud Jr., daughter, Janelle, and brothers Walt and Delbert.

He is survived by his son, Mike, grandchildren, Kyle and Danielle Lambert (Janelle’s), Justin, Joshua and Jeremy Dory (Bud Jr.’s), and Angela Dunlap and Anthony Dory (Mike’s), two great granddaughters, a great grandson, brother Fred, sister-in-law Margaret Smith and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Bud and Pat’s wonderful neighbors for their friendship and support, the great people from the Nevada Nutrition Program, the staff at William Bee Ririe Hospital and the caring folks at White Pine Care Center.

A Celebration of Life for Bud and Pat will be held at a later date.

9-16-obit-stubbsDean Stubbs, beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away on Sept. 11, 2016. His family will miss him more than words can express.

Dean was born in New York state in 1929, and was the first in his family to earn a college degree, including a Master’s in Educational Administration from SUNY Fredonia.

He spent six years as a teacher in McGill, and was then principal in East Ely for 29 years. Beloved and respected by his students and teachers, Dean loved his job and inspired many young people to achieve their dreams through education.

He was also committed to the greater good of his community, encouraging and guiding his students to complete community projects such as raising money for the first county-wide 911 system, the jaws of life for Ely’s emergency medical team, the relocation of the Cherry Creek Depot to the White Pine County Museum, and many others.

In his spare hours he was a talented builder, contractor and electrician, and he built several homes and other structures in Ely. He served for many years on the William B. Ririe Hospital Board, the Mt. Wheeler Power Board, and the Deseret Power Board.

Dean strongly believed in helping others. In his quiet and capable way, he was always willing to plow driveways in the winter, use his backhoe to help homeowners and friends with projects, build additions to Magic Carpet Pre-School where he was a fixture with the kids, and using his natural handyman talents to help people fix anything and everything. There was very little he could not do.

Dean is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean; his daughter, Donna Mumford and her husband Dr. Lawrence Mumford of Laguna Niguel, Calif; his granddaughter Rebecca Jean Hand of Nyack, N.Y, her husband Bill Hand, and his great-granddaughter Dinah Michelle Hand; and his twin sister, Jean DeBrine of Rochester, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held in Ely in October. A notice will be published with the date. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to donate to the White Pine County High School Scholarship Fund.

We love and miss you and will never forget you.
