Dona Lee (Fisher) Lani was born in Portola, CA on October 21, 1931. Dona passed away surrounded by her family on October 26, 2017 in St. George Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Grace (Cazier) Fisher, siblings Jerry Fisher, Richard Fisher, Patricia (Fisher) Brooks and grandson, Adam Lani.

Dona is survived by her husband Donald Lani of Preston, NV, brothers Robert Fisher of Las Vegas, NV, Edward C. Fisher of Ely, NV, children: son Donald Frank Lani and wife Donna of Lund, daughters; Rue Denise Lani of Parker, Co., Tanya Kay (Lani) Atkin and husband Rick of Preston, NV. Grandchildren; Cole Lani of Round Mt. NV, Court Lani of San Diego, CA, Brooke Lani of Round Mt., NV, Chase Lani of Lund, NV, Lowry Peacock of Parker, CO, Kaylynn Atkin of St. George, UT, Jason Atkin of Ely, NV.

Dona was a true woman of the west. She grew up just south of the narrows along Current Creek where her and Patsy spent time playing in the water and where she met her husband of 67.75 years, Donald Lani. Their families were neighbors and friends ever since then. Dona and Donnie were married December 31, 1949 in Ely, NV. The celebration began by riding a horse drawn chariot fashioned out of an axle with a wooden platform as fast as it would go down main street. Dona said she thought she was going to die that night for sure. Dona loved and lived her life with all her heart and with the fiery personality of her bright red long beautiful hair.

Their first child, Donald Frank Lani was born in Ely, NV. October 24, 1950. Momma loved and protected him as she did each of us. One of her favorite stories was how she used her head as a tent pole in the sleeping bag while she changed his diapers so they would be warm, while camped with daddy, Frank and Netta picking pine nuts to sell in San Francisco to make a living during those first years. Two daughters came along in the following years born in Ely also, Rue Denise Lani, December 12, 1954 and Tanya Kay Lani, April 5, 1960.

Dona always worked hard beside and with Donnie, she was a great wife and best friend to Donnie. Dona created a home and beauty out of everything everywhere she went. She loved flowers and had them in bloom, every kind and color inside and out, all her life. She made our clothes, helped to raise our food and was the best cook ever. She loved birds and hatched and raised every kind she could get an egg for in her incubator while living at Angleworm.

Dona belonged to the women’s club that met once a month at the Currant Creek School house where she met and became fast friends with the women of Currant, Duckwater, Railroad Valley and White River Valley. Through the years she made quilts, crocheted and knitted, did macramé and sewed. Using her talents to keep us warm and supplement the household income. She taught us how to can and preserve fruit and vegetables. Dad was a good provider and along with raising every type of animal for meat he brought home a nice fat deer and we all made jerky to get us through the winter along with the pine nuts we gathered together with Dan and Phyllis, Peggy, Danny and Gary.

Whether farming along Currant Creek , managing a silver mine in Mexico, panning for gold in Alaska, managing the bar, café and ranches at Currant Creek or running the Angleworm, working for mines along the west coast from Alaska to Mexico; mom was beside dad and kept us kids happy and healthy thru thick and thin.

Dona spent her last years in Preston, Nevada next door to Tanya and Rick, whom she adored, and a few miles from Doom and Donna, who all helped her to the very end with all their families and friends. Dona had never let a week go by without talking to her daughter Rue since she moved out of the area in 1989. Dona often said her favorite times were with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, brothers and sister whom she loved dearly.

We will never forget Dona and love and remember her with fondness forever.

Lori Jean (Varney) Rosevear

Lori Jean (Varney) Rosevear passed away November 17th, 2017 in Ely, Nevada at the age of 58 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born September 20, 1959 in San Pedro, California to Lillis Jean Reeves and Harold Varney. Lori was the oldest of four children; her brother John Varney and sisters Sherri Lee and Christy Lee. After her parents divorced her mother remarried and the family relocated to Florida. During high school she chose to live with her father, Harold and step mother, Cristine in Chatsworth, California where she graduated from Chatsworth High School in 1977 with many lifelong friends.

In 1982 Lori traveled to Ely, Nevada to attend the wedding of her cousin Nancy Grigsby to Craig Marich, where she met Dan Rosevear, they married in 1986 and lived on the Rosevear family ranch outside of Lund.  Dan and Lori were married for 8 years and sharing two children together; Jake born in 1987 and Jenna born in 1990. Lori was a stay at home mom and took wonderful care of her children.  She moved to Ely where she was employed with the United Postal Service.  In 1996 she and her children moved to Wenatchee, Washington when she accepted a transfer position with the post office.

Life got busy fast as she was raising two kids that she made sure were involved in every sport and activity. Her greatest moments in life were watching her children play sports throughout their school years where she was often the loudest mom in the stands. Lori’s hard work at the Wenatchee Post Office allowed her to purchase her dream home. Lori’s dream house happened to be next door to people that would become lifelong friends.

In 2004, Lori made the decision to move back to Ely, Nevada where her children could be closer to their Nevada family – this was no surprise as Lori always put her children first. While in Ely, Lori worked at a number of different positions with the State of Nevada.

After both of her kids graduated from White Pine High school, Lori moved to Reno to be closer to her Aunt’s. Lori’s mom had passed away in 2006 and her aunts were second moms, especially her Aunt Cherie – they shared a special bond. In 2009, she was blessed with her first grandbaby; her granddaughter, Kiala Jean Reynolds who immediately became her biggest joy. In 2011 she was blessed with  grandson, Conner Thomas Rosevear and in 2014 her daughter Jenna married Nate Trujillo gaining step-grandson Diego and in 2016 they added another granddaughter, Kenlee.  Her grandbabies were her pride and joy and they loved their Mimi as much as she loved them. On Mother’s Day in 2017, Lori learned she would be blessed with another grandson from Jake and Addie to make his arrival in January, 2018. Although she was truly heartbroken she wasn’t going to meet him, we know she is enjoying him as we speak. Lori’s heart was filled with love for her two grandsons and two granddaughters, you would rarely hear Lori tell a story that didn’t involve her children or grandchildren – they were truly the highlight of her life.

Lori was the most kind-hearted lady one could hope to meet. Not only did her kids and grandkids think the world of her, she had a special touch with everyone she crossed paths with and made friends everywhere she went. Even throughout her battle with cancer, Lori would make friends with all her nurses and other care givers. She maintained lifelong friends because that’s the type of person she was – always a listening ear and a helpful heart. She was not one to lose touch with people even though they were separated by distance and time. In addition to her love of people she was passionate about animals.   This love of animals led her to work a part-time job with Blue Buffalo dog food, she became a dedicated and passionate.  During her work with Blue Buffalo she lent support assisting in the adoption of cats and dogs and was always anxious to share stories of another successful pet finding a loving home.

Lori had a natural talent for interior design, gardening and home improvement, she enjoyed watching renovations and DIY projects on TV and was a HGTV fanatic. Her knowledge and enthusiasm proved to be a wonderful resource for family and friends when they needed assistance or ideas for a project.  She loved to shop at thrift stores and restore used items into beautiful new treasures. She was an avid sports fan and loved her Seahawks and 49’ers.  Lori loved to cook and never came to a dinner party empty handed she was in her element with a glass of wine and preparing a huge delicious feast for her family.  She was known for her spunky attitude and ability to crack jokes, she loved to laugh and celebrated life to the fullest.  Above all, Lori’s life centered around her family and friends.

Lori demonstrated tremendous courage in her fight against cancer and kept her spirits up and head held high for those around her. Lori was never alone in her battle – she was always surrounded by friends and family and spent the last couple of months with her daughter and cousin Nancy Marich in Ely. It was rare to not have someone by her bedside. Lori’s family and friends came to visit from all over and these visits meant the world to her. One of her favorite memories over the last month was when her father and step mom made the trip from California to spend a lovely four days with her.

Lori will be missed beyond what words can explain as such a monumental person in our lives has been taken away. She certainly wasn’t ready to leave and none of us were ready to say goodbye, but we know we now have a forever angel to protect us and she will always be with us.

It is with great gratitude that we recognize our favorite and most helpful people in Lori’s final days, nurses Jill Destender, Healther Gingell, Amanda Lewis, physician’s assistant Rocky Jones and all of the staff at Huntsman and William Bee Ririe. With the loving care of these sweet souls Lori’s final days were more comfortable, their care was extended to her family members.  We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lillis Jean Reeves and her aunts Cheri Grigsby and Reba Reeves.  She is survived by her children, Jake (Addie) Rosevear of Reno and Jenna (Nate) Trujillo of Ely, grandchildren Kiala Reynolds, Diego and Kenlee Trujillo and Connor and Owen (arriving January 2018) Rosevear. Her brother John Varney of Maui Hawaii, sisters Sherri Lee of Maui, Hawaii and Christy Lee of Wenatchee, Wa.,  her father Harold and step-mother Cristine of California and her cousins Nancy Marich of Ely and Tom Grigsby of Gardnerville.

Family, friends and others whose lives were touched by Lori are invited to the Mountain Vista Chapel at 450 Mill Street in Ely, Nevada on Friday, December 1st, 2018 at 11:00 with a luncheon to follow, to remember the life of this wonderful woman.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Each year we see different programs that put out requests to people asking them to help provide gifts for children so that they will be visited by Santa Claus, after their caregivers, whether it be Dad and Mom, Mom, Dad or grandparents have warned them not to expect much this year from sound up. They still tumble out of bed and hurry to the Christmas tree in their homes thinking not to expect much from Santa he always comes through.

Every year I have provided to one of the local programs. On Christmas morning I smile and have a warm feeling inside knowing that there is a child that is beaming with joy, laughing, because Santa did come to his house. If you have provided to the program’s you understand this feeling. If you have not, you should start this Christmas and give yourself a gift Santa Claus does… bring the smile of a child on Christmas morning. This is the reason for the season.

Mark Drain

To the Editor,

City Council and Residents of White Pine County:

White Pine County’s people need to stop the needless killing their pets.  We must stop the situation that prompted PETA’s offer to pay for humane euthanasia training of the Animal Control officer.  Currently, as the recent article by the Ely Times revealed, discarded animals are placed in a vacuum chamber to kill them.  Air is withdrawn from the chamber until their lungs explode.

And we need to stop forcing the City to clean up the problems that we create. The number of dogs and cats (family members) who are dumped at the pound in this community is too high, and disproportionate to the population. The “surrender” rate at the pound is off the charts.  On some days, more than 10 dogs are given up by their families. And this doesn’t count the scores of puppies, cats, and kittens who are discarded by irresponsible people.  It is difficult for the City to keep up with the number of animals that people drop off at the pound.

When people are tired of the entertainment that puppies and kittens provide, they dump the entire lot because they don’t want to take responsibility for their lives.   Or, in an equally despicable way, they give them to others who use them as bait for their lion dogs, or worse.  Or believing that any animal is basically wild, anyway, they dump them out in the woods and figure they’ll make it. They don’t make it.  They are eaten by predators or starve to death, never understanding why their family pushed them out of the car in an area where they had never been, and from which they will never return.  Or people drop off their unwanted pets in neighborhoods, figuring someone will adopt them.  Sometimes they are rescued, most of the time they aren’t.

People got the impression that if they dropped off a cat in my neighborhood, I would take it in.  And I did save 17 cats – all starving, some declawed, most on the verge of reverting back to being feral.  But I have a limit, and my limit for properly caring for these little ones has been reached.  And it is unfair to burden those who love animals with those who should be cared for by their own people.

And to those who believe that it is good for an animal to have “just one litter”, there is no scientific evidence for support this.  If you wind up killing the entire litter, how does that help the animal?

Overpopulation is the problem, and overpopulation and irresponsibility has created the issue with Animal Control being overrun by unwanted pets.

But the City is not off the hook.  Ely has used the barbaric vacuum chamber for years, which is horrific.  Attempts by myself and others to change this to a humane injection method have fallen on deaf ears.  This is reprehensible.  We are the only county in the entire state of Nevada that persists in using the vacuum chamber.  This says something – and points to the fact that excuses no longer hold water.

Richard (Dick) Joe Saiz

Richard (Dick) Joe Saiz, age 75, was welcomed into Heaven by his grandson Trevor on December 3, 2017. He lived in Overton, Nevada and passed away while doing what he loved most, riding and cutting on his horse Benny. He is now resting peacefully in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Dick was born in Raton, New Mexico on May 18, 1942 to Joe Marbricio Saiz and Beatrice Stella (Garcia) Saiz. He is the second oldest of 4 siblings, Dollie, Ramona, Rebecca and Joe. At a very young age, Dick had a passion for horses, cowboy boots and cowboy hats. His mom bought him his first stick horse when he was 5 years old, along with boots and a cowboy hat. He “rode” his horse all over the place and boasted to his mom how one day he was going to have a real horse. From that day forward, he only wore cowboy boots and eventually raised many horses. When Dick was 11 years old, his father got a job at Kennecott Copper as a miner and moved his family to Kimberly, Nevada. There is where Dick got his first job delivering newspapers on his scooter with his little brother Joe on the back tossing papers. When Dick reached his high school years, his father’s job relocated his family and housing from Ruth to East Ely, Nevada. There is where his mother started her career as a nurse and bought their first home for $250.

In high school, Dick began working at the Bowling Alley as a pinsetter and always had “change in his pocket” and nice cars. No one could figure out how he obtained so many nice cars, but he did. In 11th grade Dick and his “buddies” decided to join the Army. Dick was the only one that passed the physical and joined the Army without his friends. He received his GED in the service and stationed in Germany for 3 years and worked as a mechanic on Army tanks and Jeeps.

Upon his return to Ely, Dick had various jobs working as a mechanic at gas stations, eventually meeting the love of his life and life time partner Linda Piccinini. On March 28, 1963 they were married in Ely and began their life together having their first child Tammy on March 5, 1964, their second child Beady on July 2, 1965 and began obtaining their horses. Dick landed a job at Kennecott Copper Mines in McGill Nevada and there is where he began his successful career eventually obtaining a respectful foreman position. He worked for Kennecott for 16 years, raising their children, riding horses and attending Cutting Horseshows. When Kennecott shut down in 1981, he went on to work for White Pine County as the County Maintenance supervisor and then onto Ely State Prison in 1989 as a Facility Supervisor III where he retired from the State of Nevada in 2007.

After retiring, Dick and Linda moved to Overton Nevada along with their horses and horse gear, where the weather was nice year round so that he could ride his horses as much as possible. Although Dick loved hunting, fishing, working and giving cutting lessons to anyone who wanted them, his passion was riding and cutting on his horses. He competed, trained, coached, taught and mentored many people during his life time passion and eventually met his dear friend and trainer, Vince Bellon whom he loved as one of his own. Dick won many National Cutting Horse Association saddles, belt buckles, blankets, jackets and held many titles during his long life of Riding and Cutting on his beautiful horses. Dick’s love for his family was one of a kind. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren beyond words and had nicknames for all of them. His daughters and grand children were the light of his life. And he was always so proud of them. He mentored, taught and loved them all unconditionally and always loved to hear their problems and give them advice. He loved his mother, father and siblings with the utmost affection and always promised to take care of them as long as he could. His love for animals was one of a kind and always treated and took care of them no matter the cost.

Dick was a beloved friend, son, brother, husband, father and grandfather and he will be missed more than anything by all that knew him. Raymond Curtis Kranovich, known to his loved ones as “Ray”  or “the old man,” died on November 15, 2017 at the age of 59 in his hometown Ely, Nevada.

Ray was born on November 19, 1957 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was never one for a big city. In his happiest state of mind, you could find him roaming the back roads of Nevada alone in his truck. He would spend days out there, meandering the hills, feeding his curiosity for old mining sites, and exploring through the Nevada desert. He was a simple man and only ever wanted simple things. Mining, hunting, fishing, wandering, a cold beer, a pack of cigarettes, a few good friends, his children, working on hot rods, and Nevada.

Although Ray has traveled around the world Nevada was the one place he truly felt at home, sitting on a mountaintop with a fire burning. Many people would say he was the most stubborn man in the world, but hidden underneath his walls all he possessed was a beautiful soul full of love, compassion, and generosity. Ray was the hardest working man with a talent and passion for mining and tinkering in the garage.

He is survived by son, Laren Kranovich, three daughters, Kamri Kranovich, Shayla Kranovich Owens, and Alexis Kranovich, son-in-law Matthew Owens, grandson McKray Kranovich, brother Michael Kranovich, sister Katherine Kranovich Rountree, and numerous nieces and nephews.
