In Memoriam – Richard Lee Abney

Richard Lee Abney, a true cowboy at heart, spread love and shared lessons from yesterday to make others’ tomorrows a little brighter. Richard was born in the Haight Ashbury District of San Francisco, CA on December 10, 1953 . He spent some time as a child in Kentucky, then eventually made Fresno his home with his mother, sister and two brothers. Richard attended C.L McLane High School in Fresno prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1972. He trained at Camp Pendleton, CA before spending three years aboard the USS Kittyhawk; he always had great pride for his country.

On September 1, 1990, Richard married his soul mate, Susan Penrod. Together, they raised a blended family in Atwater; this family became the driving force behind everything Richard did. The six children they raised together fondly called him Dad or Pops, two titles he loved.

In 1992, Richard went into business with his brother Mike and the duo owned and operated Abney Construction in Atwater until 2018. His passion for a well-done project was evident in every aspect of his work; he was known as a perfectionist. Even in recent years, he picked up a job every now and then because he absolutely loved hands-on work.

In the spring of 2019, Richard became ill. He fought like a warrior and demonstrated an incredible amount of determination and strength. He and Susan decided to purchase a travel trailer to tour the United States and they were able to make a handful of trips before he was too weak to go anymore. This summer they took their final trip to Nevada before coming home so Richard could make his transition to a better place, where he would no longer suffer.

On September 1, 2020, Richard and Susan celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary and Richard passed peacefully just three days later on September 4, 2020.

Richard Abney was preceded in death by his step father, Frank Garcia and sister, Becky Coster. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Susan (Penrod) Abney and the six children they shared together: Michelle (Gerald) Lopez; Thaddeus (Luana) Stark; Nathan (Amber) Dailey; Sondra (David) Sackett; David (Lauren) Lanum; and Jim (Sophia) Lanum. He leaves behind his mother, Lupe Garcia and brothers Danny Abney and Mike (Donna) Abney to cherish his memory. The legacy of love and pride for his eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three nieces, extended family and a host of friends and neighbors is vast.

Richard  would not want his family or friends to mourn his loss, but instead to celebrate the good times and love that was shared during his lifetime. Services will be private and internment will be at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, where Richard will be buried with military honors. In Richard’s memory, we will learn from yesterday and focus on all of our tomorrows.

Dan Walter Rosevear passed away unexpectedly at his ranch home in White River, Nevada on September 21, 2020. Dan was born in Ely, Nevada on April 11, 1957 to Thomas and Angela Klaich Rosevear. He grew up in Ely, Nevada where he attended East Ely Grade School and White Pine High School, graduating in 1975.

In high school, Dan excelled in sports, playing basketball, football and wrestling. Dan was prom king and Vice President his senior year and remained lifelong friends with many of his schoolmates.  After High school, Dan attended the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls where he earned his degree in Agricultural Business. He continued his education at Montana State University in Bozeman where he enjoyed exploring the “Big Sky” country and its outdoor activities. Later in life he returned to school for accelerated education in practical livestock veterinary skills at Colorado State University.

Dan returned home from Montana State to help his parents operate the Atlantic Richfield Oil and Gas Bulk Plant as well as the Rosevear Ranches in White River and Rosevear Farm in Lund. He delivered fuel all over eastern Nevada. Upon the sale of the plant, Dan opened his own trucking business to transport Alfalfa hay from Nevada to dairy farms in Los Angeles. Driving through the big cities was not for him. So, after a few years he sold out. For the next decade, Dan worked for Mac oil in Railroad Valley, where he refined his ability to fix anything. After purchasing a home in McGill, he began working for the White Pine County Road Department for several years as a heavy equipment operator.  Throughout his life, Dan worked on the family ranch and farm. Often irrigating fields, maintaining equipment or haying after working a full day’s shift elsewhere or giving up his weekends to help his parents. If they needed him, he was there.

In 2016, upon his dad’s retirement, Dan took over all operations of the Rosevear Ranches and Lund Farm. As was his nature, he worked very hard and excelled. He proudly carried forward the legacy of the Rosevears in agriculture that began with his great grandfather Tom in the late 1800’s. Dan was elected to the Board of Directors for Mt. Wheeler Power Company. He served a term and chose not to seek reelection, so he could spend his spare time with his two children Jake and Jenna. His pride and joy was watching his kids play sports at White Pine and Lund High School. He attended every game often videoing it. He was the best father and you would often hear him speaking with such pride about his kids. In 2009 his first grandchild, Kiala, was born followed by Conner Thomas, Kenlee, and Owen who filled his life with joy. He loved being a “papa”.

In 2012, Dan met Annette and soon became best friends. Dan grew very fond of Annette’s daughter Shay (Sean) Collins and their two boys Bentlee and Talon. Dan and Annette enjoyed taking trips together including Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. They always enjoyed each other’s company and had planned their wedding date for November 11 th , 2020 – Dan’s choice of course as his favorite number was 11.

Dan will always be remembered for his sharp style, big beautiful smile and handsome blue eyes. We will all treasure every memory with him, and we will all remember him as the hardest worker we knew.

Dan is survived by; His father Tom Rosevear. His children; Jake (Addie) Rosevear, Jenna Trujillo (Rosevear). Grandchildren; Kiala Reynold, Kenlee Trujillo, and Conner and Owen Rosevear. Sister; Cathy Rosevear, Laura (Mike) Morrison. Niece; Monaqa Bell. Nephews Andy Bell, Mitchel and Mason Morrison. John Steve Demos (Johnny)- husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, athlete, golfer, veteran and one of the most popular guy’s in White Pine County – died October 16, 2020.  He was 92 years old.

John was born September 18, 1928 in Ely, Nevada. A first generation Nevadan, John was born to his Greek immigrant parents Steve and Diana Demos. He was raised in McGill, among a community of families known as “Greektown,” where he made many of the life- long friends who shared his belief that White Pine County, Nevada was heaven on earth.

John was a superb athlete, playing baseball, football, basketball, and running track for White Pine High. He was also a proud member of McGill’s 1947 American Legion State Championship Baseball Team. His athletic traits became especially evident when he took up the game of golf later in life.

John graduated from White Pine High School in 1947.  Immediately after high school, John enlisted in the United States Army with a number of his high school friends, and he reported to Fort Ord, California for basic training. After basic training, John was stationed at Fort Knox in Kentucky for a short period of time before he was transferred back to Fort Ord. He was honorably discharged in November 1948.

In 1951, he married the love of his life, Aileen Bybee. Together they built a full and happy life in Ely with their children, Diana, Sherry, Joni Marie and Stephanie. John never had a fake bone in his body. He showed kindness and respect to everyone he met and had a knack for making everyone feel special.  He worked at Hyland Motor Chevrolet Dealership as the Parts Manager for 20 years and then in 1973 he made the decision to sell cars and went to work at Junction Motor. His warm and friendly personality and his love for interacting with customers and genuine interest in helping them was the perfect fit and made for a wonderful career. He retired in 1990 at the age of 62.

He spent his retirement years playing golf with his many friends, taking trips with Aileen and their friends and, ultimately, spending time with his grown children and many grandchildren. John was consistently loving, supportive and a beloved example of a strong, honorable man. In fact to honor this impeccable born and raised guy, John was chosen to be the Grand Marshal of the 2015 4thof July festivities in White Pine County. Mark Anthony Mays, cherished father, caring grandfather, dedicated friend, veteran, was born on November 19th, 1955 and died just before his 65th birthday late October of 2020.

Mark was a vivacious man with a childlike energy and passion for life that many can only aspire to. He dedicated his life to helping his country, bettering his community, enjoying life and the world around him, and caring for his family and friends. He was avid in his pursuit of knowledge, having attended both Modesto Junior College in 1974 for agriculture and then also attending Kansas State University in 1977, as well as delving into history throughout his life and becoming well versed on both United States history and World History. Mark additionally was very proud of his service to his country in both the U.S Military and as his time working as a police officer and then as a Correctional Officer.

For those who knew Mark, he was a pillar among men. He was self assured, stout of heart, and had a strength of character that went unchallenged in the world of today. He led a life full of passion; for his family, for his friends, for his beliefs, for his career, and for enjoying the world while he was in it. His passion for life was reflected in his boisterous, easy laugh, which invited everyone near to join in his mirth. Mark was a well travelled man, and took every opportunity to experience different parts of the world, different cultures, parks, and destinations-making sure to bring home a bottle of rum for himself and souvenirs for the whole family while he was at it. Mark also had an endless supply of care for his loved ones, never forgetting a single birthday, graduation, Christmas card, or special event. His care did not stop at immediate family either; spouses, boyfriends, extended family friends- it didn’t matter: you were getting birthday wishes in every form possible.
Death was not something that Mark feared, and he lived by the creed that, “His time was his time.” In not letting his fear of the end stop him, Mark worked hard for what he wanted from life, setting goals and achieving them with amazing ability. He made the most out of his time here, never let obstacles in life stop him, and corralled his loved ones to do the same.

For those who are survived by him, Mark Anthony Mays will always be an inspiring figure, and we can only hope to take as big of a bite out of this world and to leave half as great of a legacy.

As of now, services will be held on Friday November 13th, at 11am at the Ely City Cemetery at 1900 Compton Street in the Veteran’s area.

Grandma’s House
Poet: Catherine Pulsifer, @2016
My grandma’s house is a treasure chest
Just like my grandma, it is the best.
You will find many things to explore
When I arrive there is always an open door.
And, lots of things to take apart
From kitchen cupboards to the old wooden cart.
A house filled with warmth, laughter, and love
Our family thinks our Grandma was sent from heaven above.
2 Timothy 1:5: Connections Through Faith
There aren’t many Bible verses that speak specifically to only grandmothers, but 2 Timothy 1:5 is one that does. The verse shares ” a faith that first dwelt in your grandmother,” and continues “I am sure dwells in you as well.” It connects grandchildren and grandparents through faith.

Judilynn Cutler Hase “Judi” entered eternal life on December 2, 2020. Her spirit is carried on by her husband Scott Hase, her two children, Melissa (Cody) Crader and John (Ginger) Rick, two step-daughters, Carrie Tallman and Amy ( Steven) Howe. Ten grandchildren and one great grandson. Two surviving siblings, Jackie Narduzzo and Mike (Karen) Cutler, and an extended family of friends from every walk of life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and June Cutler and brother in law, Al Narduzzo.

Judi was born on March 17, 1943, and grew up in Watertown, South Dakota. She graduated high school in 1961 with a group of close friends who meant the world to her.

She went to college in Aberdeen, South Dakota  earning a teaching degree, and then started teaching in Huron, South Dakota where she met and married her first husband Steve Rick. They moved to Ely, Nevada in 1968 where they both taught school and raised their two kids.

She got a job in 1984 working as manager of the JOIN office in Ely. A job she loved and kept till she retired when she was 65.

She married the love of her life, Scott Hase in 1987.  They were married 33 wonderful years full of trips to Hawaii, several road trips singing 50’s songs, and spending time with family and friends.

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Judi during her 77 years, among them:

Invite new friends to Thanksgiving dinner. If they are from another country and you have trouble understanding them, learn to “listen with an accent.”  Pet every dog you see and smile at every baby! Always eat dessert!  Amaretto on ice IS nice! If you marry someone who is Japanese, become the best Japanese cook around.  Spend all your time with your kids it goes by way too fast and live every day like it’s your last.

Judi had a beautiful singing voice and sang and directed the White Pine Sweet Adeline chapter for many years. She also was in charge of Ely’s Arts in the Park and loved meeting all the new vendors.  She became the “CEO” of her class reunions and started planning and going every September. She was the best wife, mother, gramma and great gramma we could have ever asked for. She will be missed immensely by her family.

We will not be holding a service for Judi so instead of mourning her death, celebrate her life. Drink an amaretto on ice, or donate to an animal shelter, smile at a baby, or sing a song for her!

Your memory is my keepsake,

With which we’ll never part.

God has you in his keeping,

I have you in my heart.
